To Be A Slave by Julius Lester

Personal accounts - many and varied. This was actually read in conjunction with the Underground Railroad Records. Also contains descriptions of the slave quarters owned by several “founding fathers.”

The Death of Expertise by Tom Nichols

Ranty, definitely self-indulgent but also fascinating. I’m currently working with a client (professor) in university education and thinking quite a bit about the degradation of the American system - a big topic in this book. Nichols’ professional background is fascinating to me, and I also appreciate quite a bit of his political writing.
